On August 20, 2009 a partnership of local organizations, communities and state agencies unveiled plans at the annual meeting of the Lake Winnipesaukee Watershed Association (LWWA) for a comprehensive process that is intended to result in a management plan for the entire Lake Winnipesaukee Watershed. The partners include the Lake Winnipesaukee Watershed Association, Lakes Region Planning Commission, North Country Resource Conservation and Development Council, University of New Hampshire, Plymouth State University, Center for the Environment, NH Department of Environmental Services, participating watershed municipalities and several other agencies.
This first phase of the Lake Winnipesaukee Watershed Management Plan (LWWMP) includes working in the subwatersheds of Meredith, Paugus, and Sanders Bays, which include the towns of Meredith and Gilford and the city of Laconia. Current activities include water quality monitoring, evaluating land use characteristics, statistical modeling activities to determine current and projected nutrient levels in the water, website development, and educational initiatives. We are on schedule to complete Phase I of the plan by December 2010.
Over the course of the next year, the project partners intend to increase the public outreach and educational initiatives to build on the momentum of this first phase throughout the watershed. The next event concerning the Watershed Management Plan will occur on October 1, 2009 from 6:00-8:00pm at Prescott Farm, 928 White Oaks Road, Laconia, NH. All are welcome to attend.
Funding for the first phase of the LWWMP comes from several sources, including section 319 of the Clean Water Act, administered by the NH Department of Environmental Services.

LWWMP - WE NEED YOUR HELP
|
We have obtained start-up funding to initiate a management plan and a web site from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. We are also in the process of receiving additional assistance from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Much more is needed and the LWWMP needs your ideas, financial support, and participation to make this vision and approach a reality. For additional information please contact the Lake Winnipesaukee Watershed Association or the Lakes Region Planning Commission.
